As part of this system\, each province marked its founding with an Anniversary Day. \nAlthough the provinces were abolished in 1876\, their anniversary days continued as regional public holidays. \nThe Chatham Islands\, located about 800 km east of mainland New Zealand\, were included in the Wellington Province during the provincial era. \nAfter the end of the provincial system\, the islands continued to observe an anniversary day\, but with a date adapted to their own local identity and traditions. The chosen date reflects both their administrative link to Wellington and their own settlement history. \nChatham Islands Anniversary Day is observed on the Monday closest to November 30 each year. This timing connects it to St. Andrew's Day (November 30)\, which was historically linked to Wellington Anniversary Day because Wellington was originally founded by Scottish settlers who honored St. Andrew as Scotland's patron saint. \nOver time\, the Chatham Islands kept this association\, giving the islands their own recognized anniversary day. \nToday\, Chatham Islands Anniversary Day is a regional public holiday. It reinforces the islands' regional identity within New Zealand's broader framework.

Despite political division\, these regions shared a common language\, culture\, faith (Eastern Orthodoxy)\, and national identity\, which became the foundation of the Romanian unification movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries. \nThe first step toward national unity came with the Union of the Romanian Principalities in 1859\, when Wallachia and Moldavia united under Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza\, forming the basis of the modern Romanian state. Romania gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877–1878 and became a kingdom in 1881 under King Carol I. \nHowever\, large Romanian populations still lived outside the kingdom's borders\, particularly in Transylvania\, Bukovina\, and Bessarabia\, under foreign rule. The national dream of unification\, the "Great Union"\, became a defining goal for Romanians at the dawn of the 20th century. \nDuring World War I (1914–1918)\, Romania joined the Allied Powers (in 1916) with the promise of uniting all territories inhabited by Romanians. As the war ended and the Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires collapsed\, nationalist movements across Eastern Europe gained momentum. \nIn 1918\, a series of unification declarations occurred: \n– March 27\, 1918\, Bessarabia united with Romania.\n– November 28\, 1918\, Bukovina joined Romania.\n– December 1\, 1918\, Transylvania proclaimed its union with Romania at the Great National Assembly of Alba Iulia\, attended by over 100\,000 people. \nOn December 1\, 1918\, delegates representing the Romanian population of Transylvania\, Banat\, Crișana\, and Maramureș gathered in Alba Iulia\, a city with deep historical and symbolic importance. They adopted a resolution of union\, declaring their desire for all Romanians to live within one national state. This moment is regarded as the birth of modern Romania and December 1\, 1918\, became its most significant national milestone. \nThe unifications of 1918 were later recognized by international treaties\, including the Treaty of Trianon (1920)\, which confirmed Transylvania's union with Romania. By 1920\, the Kingdom of Romania had more than doubled in size\, becoming one of the largest states in Eastern Europe. The period between the two world wars is often referred to as "Greater Romania"\, symbolizing national unity and cultural flourishing. \nAfter World War II\, Romania lost some territories (Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the USSR) and came under communist rule (1947–1989). After the fall of communism in 1989\, the Romanian Parliament officially reinstated December 1 as National Day in 1990\, recognizing its historical significance.

The West Coast of the South Island was initially part of the Canterbury Province\, governed from Christchurch. \nAs gold was discovered in the 1860s\, the West Coast population grew rapidly\, and locals began pushing for more autonomy\, feeling disconnected from Canterbury's distant government. \nIn 1868\, following years of tension over governance and resources\, the West Coast was separated from Canterbury and established as Westland Province. Hokitika became the provincial capital. \nThis gave Westland direct control over its administration\, especially important during the gold rush era when the region was booming with miners\, traders\, and new settlers. \nThe official establishment date of the province was December 1\, 1868. \nLike other provinces in New Zealand\, Westland managed its own affairs during this time\, including infrastructure\, land and development. \nHowever\, the province only lasted eight years. In 1876\, the provincial governments were abolished across the country\, replaced by a centralized government system with local councils. \nEven after the abolition of provinces in 1876\, their Anniversary Days were retained as regional public holidays\, preserving local history and identity. \nFor Westland\, December 1 was chosen to commemorate the founding of Westland Province in 1868. Today\, Westland Anniversary Day is observed each year on Monday nearest to December 1.

SUMMARY:Independence Restoration Day (Portugal)
DESCRIPTION:Independence Restoration Day in Portugal commemorates the restoration of Portuguese independence in 1640 after 60 years of Spanish rule. It marks the uprising in Lisbon that ended the Iberian Union and placed King John IV of the House of Braganza on the throne. Philip II of Spain (also Philip I of Portugal)\, claiming the throne through his mother's lineage\, invaded Portugal and united the two kingdoms under one crown. \nThis began the Iberian Union (1580–1640)\, a 60-year period during which Portugal was ruled by the Spanish Habsburg monarchs. Although Portugal retained its own laws\, currency\, and colonial empire\, Spanish dominance gradually weakened the nation's autonomy and global standing. \nOver time\, Spanish kings treated Portugal's empire as part of Spain's resources\, leading to economic decline and resentment. Portuguese nobles lost influence\, taxes increased\, and Portugal became entangled in Spain's wars with France\, England\, and the Netherlands. Growing dissatisfaction among the nobility\, clergy and merchants laid the foundation for rebellion. \nOn December 1\, 1640\, a group of Portuguese nobles known as the Forty Conspirators launched a coordinated revolt in Lisbon. They stormed the Ribeira Palace\, arrested the Spanish governor\, and killed her secretary\, Miguel de Vasconcelos\, a symbol of Spanish oppression. \nThat same day\, the conspirators proclaimed João\, Duke of Braganza\, as King John IV\, restoring Portugal's independence and founding the House of Braganza\, which ruled until 1910. This event marked the end of the Iberian Union and the beginning of the Portuguese Restoration War (1640–1668). \nThe war lasted 28 years\, but Portugal steadily consolidated its sovereignty. Spain finally recognized Portuguese independence through the Treaty of Lisbon in 1668\, under King Afonso VI. The restoration reaffirmed Portugal's national identity and global presence\, allowing it to rebuild its empire and reclaim its status as a major European power. \nDecember 1 was celebrated as a national holiday almost immediately after 1640. It became a cornerstone of Portuguese patriotism\, symbolizing resilience\, independence and unity. \nDuring the Estado Novo dictatorship (1933–1974)\, the holiday remained important\, emphasizing nationalism and loyalty to the regime. However\, in 2012\, during Portugal's economic austerity measures\, the government temporarily suspended the public holiday along with several others to boost productivity. \nIn 2016\, the holiday was officially reinstated\, reflecting its deep cultural and historical significance. \nIndependence Restoration Day reminds the nation that Portugal's independence\, once lost\, was bravely reclaimed through determination and solidarity.
