This history created the multi-ethnic society that defines Suriname today. \nIn the 20th century\, Suriname saw growing demands for greater autonomy. In 1954\, it became an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands\, managing most internal affairs while the Dutch retained control over defense and foreign policy. \nBy the early 1970s\, political leaders\, particularly Prime Minister Henck Arron\, pushed strongly for full independence. Negotiations between the Dutch and Surinamese governments led to a formal agreement. \nOn November 25\, 1975\, Suriname officially became an independent republic. \nThe transfer of sovereignty was marked in Paramaribo\, with Dutch and Surinamese leaders present. The Suriname flag was raised\, and the national anthem was sung as symbols of sovereignty. \nThe Netherlands provided financial aid packages to help support Suriname's transition. \nIndependence was celebrated with great joy\, though it also brought uncertainty.
