They attributed their victory to the Virgin Mary\, carrying with them an image of the Virgin given by Emperor Maximilian I. \nAfter the conquest\, they founded a sanctuary dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Victoria\, and she was declared the patroness of Málaga. \nThe local feast of Nuestra Señora de la Victoria is celebrated on September 8 in Málaga. This date coincides with the Nativity of the Virgin Mary\, making it a Marian festival of both local and universal meaning. \nIn Spain more broadly\, the title "Our Lady of Victory" was also remembered after the Battle of Lepanto (October 7\, 1571). That date was first called the Feast of Our Lady of Victory and later changed by Pope Gregory XIII to Our Lady of the Rosary.
