However\, the Neo Destour Party\, led by Habib Bourguiba\, viewed the monarchy as a symbolic remnant of colonial influence and incompatible with the vision of a modern state. \nOn July 25\, 1957\, Tunisia's National Constituent Assembly abolished the monarchy\, proclaimed Tunisia a republic\, and appointed Habib Bourguiba as the first President. This move officially ended over 250 years of monarchical rule and launched a new political system based on republican values and popular sovereignty. \nIn the same year (1957)\, the new government designated July 25 as a national public holiday to commemorate the founding of the Republic.
