As part of this system\, each province marked its founding with an Anniversary Day. \nAlthough the provinces were abolished in 1876\, their anniversary days continued as regional public holidays. \nThe Chatham Islands\, located about 800 km east of mainland New Zealand\, were included in the Wellington Province during the provincial era. \nAfter the end of the provincial system\, the islands continued to observe an anniversary day\, but with a date adapted to their own local identity and traditions. The chosen date reflects both their administrative link to Wellington and their own settlement history. \nChatham Islands Anniversary Day is observed on the Monday closest to November 30 each year. This timing connects it to St. Andrew's Day (November 30)\, which was historically linked to Wellington Anniversary Day because Wellington was originally founded by Scottish settlers who honored St. Andrew as Scotland's patron saint. \nOver time\, the Chatham Islands kept this association\, giving the islands their own recognized anniversary day. \nToday\, Chatham Islands Anniversary Day is a regional public holiday. It reinforces the islands' regional identity within New Zealand's broader framework.

Despite political division\, these regions shared a common language\, culture\, faith (Eastern Orthodoxy)\, and national identity\, which became the foundation of the Romanian unification movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries. \nThe first step toward national unity came with the Union of the Romanian Principalities in 1859\, when Wallachia and Moldavia united under Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza\, forming the basis of the modern Romanian state. Romania gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877–1878 and became a kingdom in 1881 under King Carol I. \nHowever\, large Romanian populations still lived outside the kingdom's borders\, particularly in Transylvania\, Bukovina\, and Bessarabia\, under foreign rule. The national dream of unification\, the "Great Union"\, became a defining goal for Romanians at the dawn of the 20th century. \nDuring World War I (1914–1918)\, Romania joined the Allied Powers (in 1916) with the promise of uniting all territories inhabited by Romanians. As the war ended and the Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires collapsed\, nationalist movements across Eastern Europe gained momentum. \nIn 1918\, a series of unification declarations occurred: \n– March 27\, 1918\, Bessarabia united with Romania.\n– November 28\, 1918\, Bukovina joined Romania.\n– December 1\, 1918\, Transylvania proclaimed its union with Romania at the Great National Assembly of Alba Iulia\, attended by over 100\,000 people. \nOn December 1\, 1918\, delegates representing the Romanian population of Transylvania\, Banat\, Crișana\, and Maramureș gathered in Alba Iulia\, a city with deep historical and symbolic importance. They adopted a resolution of union\, declaring their desire for all Romanians to live within one national state. This moment is regarded as the birth of modern Romania and December 1\, 1918\, became its most significant national milestone. \nThe unifications of 1918 were later recognized by international treaties\, including the Treaty of Trianon (1920)\, which confirmed Transylvania's union with Romania. By 1920\, the Kingdom of Romania had more than doubled in size\, becoming one of the largest states in Eastern Europe. The period between the two world wars is often referred to as "Greater Romania"\, symbolizing national unity and cultural flourishing. \nAfter World War II\, Romania lost some territories (Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the USSR) and came under communist rule (1947–1989). After the fall of communism in 1989\, the Romanian Parliament officially reinstated December 1 as National Day in 1990\, recognizing its historical significance.

The West Coast of the South Island was initially part of the Canterbury Province\, governed from Christchurch. \nAs gold was discovered in the 1860s\, the West Coast population grew rapidly\, and locals began pushing for more autonomy\, feeling disconnected from Canterbury's distant government. \nIn 1868\, following years of tension over governance and resources\, the West Coast was separated from Canterbury and established as Westland Province. Hokitika became the provincial capital. \nThis gave Westland direct control over its administration\, especially important during the gold rush era when the region was booming with miners\, traders\, and new settlers. \nThe official establishment date of the province was December 1\, 1868. \nLike other provinces in New Zealand\, Westland managed its own affairs during this time\, including infrastructure\, land and development. \nHowever\, the province only lasted eight years. In 1876\, the provincial governments were abolished across the country\, replaced by a centralized government system with local councils. \nEven after the abolition of provinces in 1876\, their Anniversary Days were retained as regional public holidays\, preserving local history and identity. \nFor Westland\, December 1 was chosen to commemorate the founding of Westland Province in 1868. Today\, Westland Anniversary Day is observed each year on Monday nearest to December 1.

SUMMARY:Independence Restoration Day (Portugal)

Philip II of Spain (also Philip I of Portugal)\, claiming the throne through his mother's lineage\, invaded Portugal and united the two kingdoms under one crown. \nThis began the Iberian Union (1580–1640)\, a 60-year period during which Portugal was ruled by the Spanish Habsburg monarchs. Although Portugal retained its own laws\, currency\, and colonial empire\, Spanish dominance gradually weakened the nation's autonomy and global standing. \nOver time\, Spanish kings treated Portugal's empire as part of Spain's resources\, leading to economic decline and resentment. Portuguese nobles lost influence\, taxes increased\, and Portugal became entangled in Spain's wars with France\, England\, and the Netherlands. Growing dissatisfaction among the nobility\, clergy and merchants laid the foundation for rebellion. \nOn December 1\, 1640\, a group of Portuguese nobles known as the Forty Conspirators launched a coordinated revolt in Lisbon. They stormed the Ribeira Palace\, arrested the Spanish governor\, and killed her secretary\, Miguel de Vasconcelos\, a symbol of Spanish oppression. \nThat same day\, the conspirators proclaimed João\, Duke of Braganza\, as King John IV\, restoring Portugal's independence and founding the House of Braganza\, which ruled until 1910. This event marked the end of the Iberian Union and the beginning of the Portuguese Restoration War (1640–1668). \nThe war lasted 28 years\, but Portugal steadily consolidated its sovereignty. Spain finally recognized Portuguese independence through the Treaty of Lisbon in 1668\, under King Afonso VI. The restoration reaffirmed Portugal's national identity and global presence\, allowing it to rebuild its empire and reclaim its status as a major European power. \nDecember 1 was celebrated as a national holiday almost immediately after 1640. It became a cornerstone of Portuguese patriotism\, symbolizing resilience\, independence and unity. \nDuring the Estado Novo dictatorship (1933–1974)\, the holiday remained important\, emphasizing nationalism and loyalty to the regime. However\, in 2012\, during Portugal's economic austerity measures\, the government temporarily suspended the public holiday along with several others to boost productivity. \nIn 2016\, the holiday was officially reinstated\, reflecting its deep cultural and historical significance. \nIndependence Restoration Day reminds the nation that Portugal's independence\, once lost\, was bravely reclaimed through determination and solidarity.

The seventh emirate\, Ras Al Khaimah\, joined the federation shortly after on February 10\, 1972. \nSheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan\, ruler of Abu Dhabi\, was elected the first president of the UAE and is widely honored as the Father of the Nation. \nThe UAE was built on principles of cooperation\, stability\, and mutual progress. \nThe unification allowed the emirates to modernize infrastructure\, develop a shared economy and defense\, and strengthen national identity and global presence. \nOver the decades\, the UAE has evolved into a global leader in finance\, technology\, culture and diplomacy.

After Franco's death in November 1975\, King Juan Carlos I assumed the throne and initiated Spain's transition to democracy. \nIn 1977\, Spain held its first democratic elections since the Civil War (1936–1939). \nA Constitutional Committee of seven deputies\, known as the Fathers of the Constitution\, represented different political ideologies (from conservatives to communists) and worked together to draft a document that would unite the country. The draft aimed to guarantee democracy\, reconcile divisions from the Civil War\, and balance unity with regional autonomy. \nOn December 6\, 1978\, Spaniards voted in a national referendum to approve the new Constitution with 87.8% voted "Yes"\, and about 59% of the electorate participated\, a strong show of support. \nThe Constitution was signed into law on December 27\, 1978\, and came into force on December 29\, 1978. \nTo honor this pivotal moment\, December 6 was declared Constitution Day. Since then\, it has been observed annually as a national public holiday\, reminding citizens of the importance of democracy and the rule of law.

Finnish culture\, laws\, and institutions developed under Swedish influence\, while Swedish remained the language of administration. \nIn 1809\, Sweden ceded Finland to Russia after the Finnish War. Finland became the Grand Duchy of Finland\, an autonomous territory within the Russian Empire. For most of the 19th century\, Finland enjoyed relative autonomy\, with its own parliament (the Diet)\, currency\, and customs. \nHowever\, by the late 19th century\, Russia imposed Russification policies\, reducing Finnish autonomy and sparking resentment. \nThe Russian Revolution of 1917 created turmoil and weakened Russian control. Finnish leaders saw the opportunity to seek full independence. \nOn December 6\, 1917\, the Finnish Parliament adopted the Declaration of Independence\, drafted by Prime Minister Pehr Evind Svinhufvud. \nThe new government sought recognition abroad. Soviet Russia recognized Finland on December 31\, 1917. Other nations\, including Germany\, Sweden\, and France\, followed in early 1918. \nSoon after independence\, Finland was divided by internal conflict. The Finnish Civil War (January – May 1918) pitted the Reds (supported by Soviet Russia) against the Whites (supported by Germany). The Whites won the war\, solidifying Finland's independence but leaving deep scars in society. \nDuring World War II\, Finland fought two wars against the Soviet Union: the Winter War (1939–1940) and the Continuation War (1941–1944). Despite territorial losses\, Finland preserved its independence\, unlike many other nations bordering the USSR. \nIndependence Day was first celebrated officially in 1919\, but it became especially significant after WWII as a day of solemn remembrance and national pride. Families light two candles in windows\, a tradition dating back to resistance against Russian rule\, symbolizing unity and independence. \nIndependence Day is Finland's most important national holiday\, combining solemn remembrance (for those who fought for freedom) with celebrations of sovereignty\, democracy\, and Finnish identity.

For nearly five decades\, political opposition\, free speech and religion were banned\, and Albania became a closed-off totalitarian state. By the late 1980s\, as communist governments across Eastern Europe began collapsing\, Albanians started demanding political reform\, freedom and democracy. \nThe pivotal moment occurred in December 1990 in Tirana\, when students from the University of Tirana and other higher institutions organized large-scale protests against the communist regime. The demonstrations began in early December in the student dormitories\, a residential area for university students. Protesters demanded democracy\, pluralism\, and freedom of expression. \nOn December 8\, 1990\, thousands of students marched through the streets of Tirana\, marking the first major anti-communist protest in the country's history. Their courage sparked a nationwide movement that quickly gained support from intellectuals\, workers\, and citizens from all walks of life. \nIn the weeks following the December 8 protests\, the first opposition party was established on December 12\, 1990\, ending the one-party rule that had dominated the nation since 1944. To commemorate the bravery and idealism of the students who ignited the democratic revolution\, the Albanian government declared December 8 as National Youth Day. It was officially recognized in 2009 as a national holiday\, symbolizing both youth empowerment and the rebirth of Albanian democracy. \nThe day serves as both a tribute to the students of 1990 and an inspiration to future generations to remain active in building a democratic and progressive society.

TANU led the independence movement and pushed for peaceful self-rule through civic organization and political activism. \nFrom 1958 to 1960\, elections were held\, leading to increased African participation in government. \nOn December 9\, 1961\, Tanganyika gained full independence\, with Julius Nyerere as Prime Minister. \nIndependence Day in Tanzania is a tribute to the end of colonialism\, a reminder of national resilience\, and a celebration of peaceful unity.

His act of self-immolation was a desperate protest against unemployment\, corruption\, and state repression\, and it ignited a nationwide uprising. \nMassive protests quickly spread across Tunisia\, led by youth\, workers and civil society groups. \nOn January 14\, 2011\, President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali\, who had ruled Tunisia for 23 years\, fled the country. \nTunisia's uprising was the first successful revolution of the Arab Spring\, inspiring protests across the Arab world. \nInitially\, January 14 was commemorated as Revolution Day\, marking Ben Ali's ouster. \nIn 2021\, President Kais Saied changed the official holiday date to December 17\, the day the revolution actually began. \nThe new name became "Revolution and Youth Day"\, to emphasize both the start of the revolution and the central role of Tunisia's youth.

Over time\, it became an important hub for trade between China\, Japan\, and Europe\, blending Eastern and Western cultures. Although China maintained ultimate sovereignty\, Portugal administered Macau as a colony. \nIn 1979\, Portugal and China formally established diplomatic relations\, and discussions began regarding Macau's future. These talks culminated in the Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration signed on April 13\, 1987\, which outlined the terms of Macau's return to China. It was agreed that Macau would become a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China\, retaining a high degree of autonomy\, its own legal system\, currency\, and way of life for 50 years after the handover. \nAt midnight on December 20\, 1999\, sovereignty was officially transferred\, ending more than 442 years of Portuguese administration. The ceremony was attended by Chinese President Jiang Zemin\, Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio\, and the newly appointed Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah\, marking the formal establishment of the Macau SAR. \nSince then\, Macau SAR Establishment Day has been celebrated annually with flag-raising ceremonies\, fireworks\, and cultural performances\, symbolizing Macau's successful reintegration with China and the preservation of its multicultural heritage\, prosperity\, and unique identity under the "One Country\, Two Systems" model.

Its observance in Macau\, as in much of the Chinese world\, reflects a blend of ancestral reverence\, seasonal transition and family unity. \nThe festival dates back more than 2\,000 years to the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE)\, though its origins can be traced even earlier to the study of the solar calendar and yin-yang philosophy. Ancient Chinese astronomers determined the Winter Solstice to be the day when yin (darkness\, cold) reaches its peak and yang (light\, warmth) begins to grow again\, symbolizing the rebirth of sunlight and the renewal of life. This understanding made the Winter Solstice a time to celebrate the balance of nature and the cyclical rhythm of the universe. \nTraditionally\, emperors held grand Heaven Worship ceremonies to pray for prosperity and harmony in the coming year. Over time\, the festival evolved into a family-centered observance\, emphasizing reunion\, gratitude\, and respect for ancestors. \nIn Macau\, where Chinese and Portuguese cultures coexist\, the Winter Solstice remains a cherished local tradition. Families gather for ancestral offerings and reunion meals\, often featuring tangyuan (sweet glutinous rice balls) symbolizing unity and completeness. In southern China and Macau\, the festival is often regarded as "more important than the New Year"\, as it represents the turning point toward longer days and renewed hope. \nToday\, the Winter Solstice in Macau is celebrated quietly yet meaningfully\, combining ancestral remembrance\, family gatherings\, and culinary traditions\, a reflection of the city's enduring respect for balance\, togetherness\, and the natural order.

The accord aimed to end violent political conflict and unite the country under a single party and national identity. \nAfter Zimbabwe's independence in 1980\, political rivalry between ZANU-PF\, led by Robert Mugabe\, and PF-ZAPU\, led by Joshua Nkomo\, escalated. \nThe two liberation parties had different military wings and ethnic strongholds: ZANU was predominantly Shona\, while ZAPU was predominantly Ndebele. \nAccusations of sabotage and arms stockpiling led to the Gukurahundi period (1983–1987)\, during which a military unit loyal to Mugabe was deployed to Matabeleland and Midlands\, resulting in widespread human rights violations and the deaths of an estimated 10\,000 to 20\,000 civilians. \nTo halt the violence and political instability\, Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo held negotiations\, culminating in the signing of the Unity Accord on December 22\, 1987. \nThe following are the key outcomes of the accord: \n– PF-ZAPU was merged into ZANU-PF\n– Joshua Nkomo was appointed Vice President\n– Political hostilities officially ended\n– A vision of national unity and reconciliation was adopted \nNational Unity Day was established as a public holiday shortly after the signing of the Unity Accord\, and it commemorates the end of armed political conflict and recognizes the importance of peace\, and unity.

Ethnic clashes\, particularly between groups on Guadalcanal and Malaita\, led to widespread displacement\, violence\, and the collapse of law and order. \nThe economy and government functions were heavily disrupted\, and many communities suffered deeply during this time. \nIn 2003\, the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI)\, led by Australia and supported by Pacific nations\, intervened at the request of the Solomon Islands government. \nThe Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) restored stability\, supported governance\, and helped rebuild institutions. Alongside international support\, local reconciliation processes—led by churches\, community leaders\, and traditional structures—played a major role in restoring peace. \nIn 2004\, the Solomon Islands government declared the National Day of Thanksgiving as a public holiday. \nThe purpose was to set aside a day for the nation to reflect\, give thanks\, and honor the peace achieved after years of hardship. It also recognized the role of faith and community resilience in overcoming national crisis.

Slovenians increasingly pushed for democracy\, sovereignty\, and national self-determination. \nOn December 23\, 1990\, a plebiscite (referendum) was held to decide whether Slovenia should become an independent state. The question asked was whether Slovenia should become a sovereign and independent republic. \nVoter turnout was very high\, and the results were decisive: 88.5% voted in favor of independence. This showed broad support across different political parties and social groups. \nThe results were officially announced on December 26\, 1990. This date was later chosen as Independence and Unity Day (Dan samostojnosti in enotnosti). \nThe holiday emphasizes not only the decision for independence but also the unity of Slovenians\, who came together across political and ideological divides for a common cause. \nFollowing the referendum\, Slovenia prepared for independence. On June 25\, 1991\, Slovenia formally declared independence\, celebrated today as Statehood Day. The referendum of December 1990\, however\, remains the foundation — the moment Slovenians collectively decided their future.

It was governed by its own council and had close economic and political ties with neighboring cantons and countries. \nIn April 1798\, French revolutionary forces annexed Geneva\, incorporating it into France as the Département du Léman. Geneva lost its independence\, political institutions\, and much of its civic identity. \nAfter Napoleon's defeat in the German campaign of 1813\, Austrian troops entered Geneva on December 30–31\, 1813\, without resistance. \nOn December 31\, Geneva's leaders proclaimed the restoration of the Republic. This day marks the return of Geneva's independence\, its own government\, and civic symbols such as the coat of arms and flag. \nGeneva remained an independent republic for two more years. In 1815\, it joined the Swiss Confederation as a full canton\, gaining military protection and economic integration while maintaining local autonomy.
