He advocated gender equality\, access to education\, and civil rights for women as part of the country's modernization. \nOn August 13\, 1956\, the Code of Personal Status (CPS) was issued by decree\, not debated in parliament\, showing the government's bold reformist stance. \nThe CPS reforms included: 1) abolition of polygamy; 2) civil marriage requirement and legal age minimums; 3) equal divorce rights for women and men; 4) restriction of arranged/forced marriages; and 5) introduction of maternity rights and inheritance reforms. \nIn 1956\, following the passage of the CPS\, August 13 was declared National Women's Day marking the beginning of a long tradition of progressive women's rights policies.
