In India\, it has ancient roots: linked to fertility rituals\, the legend of Prahlad and Holika (victory of good over evil)\, and the playful color\, throwing of Krishna and Radha. \nBetween 1873 and 1916\, about 34\,000 Indian indentured laborers were brought from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in India to Suriname by the Dutch colonial government to work on sugar plantations. \nThese migrants carried with them their religion\, language\, music\, and festivals. Among the most important festivals transplanted was Phagwa (Holi). \nInitially celebrated in temple courtyards\, villages\, and plantation communities\, Phagwa served as both a religious and social festival. It quickly became a festival of solidarity\, bringing joy to laborers who lived under harsh colonial conditions. \nOver time\, Phagwa transcended its Hindu origins and became a national cultural celebration. It was embraced by all ethnic and religious groups in Suriname\, symbolizing unity in diversity. \nToday\, Phagwa is recognized as a national holiday\, and public celebrations fill the streets with music\, dancing and vibrant colors.

In 1922\, following the Bolshevik Revolution\, the Soviet Union officially recognized March 8 as International Women's Day\, a practice adopted by Uzbekistan as part of the USSR . \nUzbekistan\, as part of the Soviet Union\, first began officially celebrating International Women's Day in the 1920s. The day was introduced as part of broader Soviet campaigns for women's emancipation and inclusion in the workforce. \nA pivotal event in Uzbekistan's Women's Day history was the Hujum\, launched on March 8\, 1927. The Soviet government initiated this campaign to encourage Muslim women in Central Asia (including Uzbekistan) to unveil\, become literate\, and participate in public life. \nA famous moment linked to IWD in Uzbekistan's history was when Nurkhon Yuldashkhojayeva\, a young Uzbek dancer\, publicly removed her veil during an International Women's Day performance in 1928\, symbolizing women's liberation in Soviet Central Asia. \nAfter gaining independence in 1991\, Uzbekistan retained March 8 as a public holiday\, though the focus shifted from its Soviet political roots to a more cultural and family-centered celebration. \nThe day is now widely celebrated as both International Women's Day and Mother's Day\, honoring women's roles in family\, society\, education\, and the economy.

It recognizes youth contributions in national development and promotes engagement in social\, political and economic spheres. \nThe roots of Youth Day in Zambia go back to the struggle for independence\, which culminated in 1964. Many young people participated in protests and political mobilization against British colonial rule in the 1950s and early 1960s. \nAfter gaining independence\, the Zambian government sought to recognize youth efforts in achieving freedom and continue encouraging them to take part in nation-building. \nMarch 12th was designated as Youth Day to commemorate the contributions of young freedom fighters. \nWhile not tied to a single event or uprising\, the day symbolizes the youth's involvement in political activism and transformation. \nOver time\, the day has evolved from a remembrance of the past to a celebration of youth empowerment and civic participation. Since the 1970s and 1980s\, Youth Day has taken on greater national significance.
