Local fishermen were struggling to catch fish in the Paraíba River as they prepared for the visit of a regional governor\, Dom Pedro de Almeida e Portugal\, Count of Assumar. \nThree fishermen\, Domingos Garcia\, João Alves\, and Filipe Pedroso\, prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. Casting their nets\, they first pulled up a small clay statue of a headless figure from the river. When they cast their nets again\, they found the missing head. After retrieving and cleaning the statue\, they continued fishing\, and to their astonishment\, their nets filled with fish. \nThe fishermen took this as a miracle\, and word of the event spread quickly. The little dark-skinned clay statue\, later recognized as Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception\, came to be affectionately called Nossa Senhora Aparecida\, meaning "Our Lady Who Appeared". \nThe statue was first kept in the home of Filipe Pedroso\, where neighbors gathered to pray. Reports of miracles and healings attributed to Our Lady of Aparecida multiplied\, and devotion to her spread across the region. In 1745\, a small chapel was built to house the statue\, and by 1834\, a larger church\, the Old Basilica\, was constructed to accommodate growing numbers of pilgrims. \nIn 1904\, Pope Pius X authorized the canonical coronation of Our Lady of Aparecida\, officially recognizing her as a sacred symbol of devotion. Later\, in 1930\, Pope Pius XI declared her the Patroness of Brazil\, cementing her status as a national spiritual figure. \nThe Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida\, built to replace the older church\, began construction in 1955 and was completed in 1980. That same year\, Pope John Paul II visited Brazil and consecrated the new basilica\, recognizing it as one of the largest Marian shrines in the world. In 1980\, the Brazilian government officially established October 12 as a national holiday dedicated to Our Lady of Aparecida\, blending religious reverence with cultural celebration. \nToday\, millions of pilgrims visit the Basilica of Aparecida each year\, especially on October 12\, walking\, cycling or even traveling long distances on foot to express devotion and gratitude.

The aim was to recognize Indigenous peoples' rights\, cultures\, and contributions while raising awareness of issues like land rights\, discrimination\, and environmental protection. \nSuriname officially joined global observance of August 9 to highlight the role and struggles of its Indigenous peoples\, who are considered the first inhabitants of the land. \nThe day became both a cultural celebration and a political platform for Indigenous organizations to advocate for rights\, especially land ownership and recognition.

These laws forced Black South Africans to carry internal passports (known as "passes") that restricted their freedom of movement\, employment and residence. The march was one of the largest demonstrations in South African history at the time. \nThe women delivered petitions to the prime minister's office and then stood in thirty minutes of silent protest—a powerful act of defiance. Afterwards\, they sang "You strike a woman\, you strike a rock"\, a phrase that has since become a symbol of women's resilience and strength in South Africa. \nThe 1956 march was a turning point in the struggle against apartheid\, showing that women were not only victims of discriminatory laws but also leaders in resistance. Their courage challenged both racial oppression and gender inequality\, inspiring future generations to continue the fight for justice. \nAfter the end of apartheid (1948–1994)\, the democratic government declared August 9 as National Women's Day to honour the women who marched in 1956 and to celebrate women's contributions to freedom and equality.

In 1959\, Singapore became a self-governing state\, with Lee Kuan Yew as its first Prime Minister. \nIn 1963\, Singapore merged with Malaysia\, hoping to gain economic and political stability. However\, tensions quickly arose over political ideologies\, racial policies\, and economic disagreements. \nOn August 9\, 1965\, Singapore was expelled from Malaysia and declared an independent republic. \nThe separation was a profound moment: Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's tearful announcement on television captured the uncertainty and emotional weight of independence. \nSingapore's first National Day was celebrated on August 9\, 1966\, marking the first anniversary of independence. \nToday\, National Day is not only about independence but also about reflecting on Singapore's journey from a small island nation to a global hub.

By the mid-20th century\, Samoa had already embraced Mother's Day as both a church and public holiday. Father's Day naturally followed\, encouraged by church communities and reinforced by the government. \nTo ensure fathers received equal recognition\, the Government of Samoa established Father's Day as a national public holiday. \nToday\, Father's Day in Samoa is celebrated with a mix of Christian devotion\, cultural pride\, and modern gift-giving traditions. It underscores the central role of fathers in Samoan society as leaders of the family\, providers\, and community figures\, while also highlighting the island's emphasis on family unity and balance by equally honoring mothers and fathers.
