Local fishermen were struggling to catch fish in the Paraíba River as they prepared for the visit of a regional governor\, Dom Pedro de Almeida e Portugal\, Count of Assumar. \nThree fishermen\, Domingos Garcia\, João Alves\, and Filipe Pedroso\, prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. Casting their nets\, they first pulled up a small clay statue of a headless figure from the river. When they cast their nets again\, they found the missing head. After retrieving and cleaning the statue\, they continued fishing\, and to their astonishment\, their nets filled with fish. \nThe fishermen took this as a miracle\, and word of the event spread quickly. The little dark-skinned clay statue\, later recognized as Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception\, came to be affectionately called Nossa Senhora Aparecida\, meaning "Our Lady Who Appeared". \nThe statue was first kept in the home of Filipe Pedroso\, where neighbors gathered to pray. Reports of miracles and healings attributed to Our Lady of Aparecida multiplied\, and devotion to her spread across the region. In 1745\, a small chapel was built to house the statue\, and by 1834\, a larger church\, the Old Basilica\, was constructed to accommodate growing numbers of pilgrims. \nIn 1904\, Pope Pius X authorized the canonical coronation of Our Lady of Aparecida\, officially recognizing her as a sacred symbol of devotion. Later\, in 1930\, Pope Pius XI declared her the Patroness of Brazil\, cementing her status as a national spiritual figure. \nThe Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida\, built to replace the older church\, began construction in 1955 and was completed in 1980. The First Sudanese Civil War (1955–1972) erupted even before Sudan gained full independence from Britain and Egypt\, as southern Sudanese groups resisted domination by Khartoum. The Addis Ababa Agreement of 1972 granted the South a measure of autonomy\, but this peace collapsed in 1983 when the government revoked autonomy and tried to impose Islamic law nationwide. \nThis sparked the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983–2005)\, led by the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) under John Garang. The war was one of the longest and deadliest in Africa\, costing more than 2 million lives and displacing millions. \nIn 2005\, the SPLM/A and the Sudanese government signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). This treaty ended active conflict\, granted southern Sudan six years of autonomy\, and promised a referendum on independence in 2011. Though John Garang died in a helicopter crash shortly after the Agreement\, his successor Salva Kiir Mayardit carried forward the vision for independence. \nFrom January 9 to 15\, 2011\, the referendum was held under international monitoring. The results were overwhelming: 98.83% of voters chose independence. The outcome reflected decades of struggle and the aspirations of the southern people for self-rule. \nOn July 9\, 2011\, South Sudan was officially declared the world's newest nation. Salva Kiir Mayardit was sworn in as the first President\, and the new flag of South Sudan was raised in Juba.
