Local fishermen were struggling to catch fish in the Paraíba River as they prepared for the visit of a regional governor\, Dom Pedro de Almeida e Portugal\, Count of Assumar. \nThree fishermen\, Domingos Garcia\, João Alves\, and Filipe Pedroso\, prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. Casting their nets\, they first pulled up a small clay statue of a headless figure from the river. When they cast their nets again\, they found the missing head. After retrieving and cleaning the statue\, they continued fishing\, and to their astonishment\, their nets filled with fish. \nThe fishermen took this as a miracle\, and word of the event spread quickly. The little dark-skinned clay statue\, later recognized as Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception\, came to be affectionately called Nossa Senhora Aparecida\, meaning "Our Lady Who Appeared". \nThe statue was first kept in the home of Filipe Pedroso\, where neighbors gathered to pray. Reports of miracles and healings attributed to Our Lady of Aparecida multiplied\, and devotion to her spread across the region. In 1745\, a small chapel was built to house the statue\, and by 1834\, a larger church\, the Old Basilica\, was constructed to accommodate growing numbers of pilgrims. \nIn 1904\, Pope Pius X authorized the canonical coronation of Our Lady of Aparecida\, officially recognizing her as a sacred symbol of devotion. Later\, in 1930\, Pope Pius XI declared her the Patroness of Brazil\, cementing her status as a national spiritual figure. \nThe Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida\, built to replace the older church\, began construction in 1955 and was completed in 1980. That same year\, Pope John Paul II visited Brazil and consecrated the new basilica\, recognizing it as one of the largest Marian shrines in the world. In 1980\, the Brazilian government officially established October 12 as a national holiday dedicated to Our Lady of Aparecida\, blending religious reverence with cultural celebration. \nToday\, millions of pilgrims visit the Basilica of Aparecida each year\, especially on October 12\, walking\, cycling or even traveling long distances on foot to express devotion and gratitude.

The dynasty began with Kinh Dương Vương\, followed by his son Lạc Long Quân\, and then Hung Vương I\, who established the Hung line. \nVietnamese legend says the Hung Kings were descendants of a dragon father and fairy mother\, the ancestral parents of the Vietnamese people. There are believed to have been 18 generations of Hung Kings\, who introduced wet rice cultivation\, bronze casting\, and early governance. \nThe Vietnamese people have honored their founding ancestors for centuries with local and regional ceremonies at temples. The ritual of offering incense to the Hung Kings dates back at least to the 15th century\, but likely even earlier during the Lý and Trần dynasties. \nIn 1917\, under French colonial rule\, King Khải Định of the Nguyễn Dynasty officially declared the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month as the annual date for honoring the Hung Kings. \nAfter independence\, the tradition was revived and maintained by the Vietnamese government as a symbol of national unity and identity. In 2007\, Hung Kings Commemoration was officially declared a national public holiday\, reaffirming the Hung Kings as cultural and spiritual founders of Vietnam. \nEach year\, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims honor the Hung Kings with offerings\, processions\, music\, and traditional rites.

Tanganyika gained independence on December 9\, 1961\, under President Julius Nyerere\, and became a republic in 1962. \n– Zanzibar was historically ruled by Arab sultans and a hub of Indian Ocean trade\, and it became a British protectorate in the 19th century. Zanzibar gained independence on December 10\, 1963\, as a constitutional monarchy under Sultan Jamshid bin Abdullah. Just weeks later\, on January 12\, 1964\, the Zanzibar Revolution overthrew the sultanate. Abeid Amani Karume became president of the newly declared People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba. \nOn April 22\, 1964\, Tanganyika and Zanzibar signed the Articles of Union\, a legal agreement for political integration. \nOn April 26\, 1964\, the union was officially declared. The new country was initially called the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar\, but it was renamed "Tanzania" later that year\, a blend of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. \nOn that same date\, April 26 was declared a national holiday\, now known as Union Day (Siku ya Muungano)\, to be observed annually across the country.
