Local fishermen were struggling to catch fish in the Paraíba River as they prepared for the visit of a regional governor\, Dom Pedro de Almeida e Portugal\, Count of Assumar. \nThree fishermen\, Domingos Garcia\, João Alves\, and Filipe Pedroso\, prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. Casting their nets\, they first pulled up a small clay statue of a headless figure from the river. When they cast their nets again\, they found the missing head. After retrieving and cleaning the statue\, they continued fishing\, and to their astonishment\, their nets filled with fish. \nThe fishermen took this as a miracle\, and word of the event spread quickly. The little dark-skinned clay statue\, later recognized as Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception\, came to be affectionately called Nossa Senhora Aparecida\, meaning "Our Lady Who Appeared". \nThe statue was first kept in the home of Filipe Pedroso\, where neighbors gathered to pray. Reports of miracles and healings attributed to Our Lady of Aparecida multiplied\, and devotion to her spread across the region. In 1745\, a small chapel was built to house the statue\, and by 1834\, a larger church\, the Old Basilica\, was constructed to accommodate growing numbers of pilgrims. \nIn 1904\, Pope Pius X authorized the canonical coronation of Our Lady of Aparecida\, officially recognizing her as a sacred symbol of devotion. Later\, in 1930\, Pope Pius XI declared her the Patroness of Brazil\, cementing her status as a national spiritual figure. \nThe Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida\, built to replace the older church\, began construction in 1955 and was completed in 1980. That same year\, Pope John Paul II visited Brazil and consecrated the new basilica\, recognizing it as one of the largest Marian shrines in the world. In 1980\, the Brazilian government officially established October 12 as a national holiday dedicated to Our Lady of Aparecida\, blending religious reverence with cultural celebration. \nToday\, millions of pilgrims visit the Basilica of Aparecida each year\, especially on October 12\, walking\, cycling or even traveling long distances on foot to express devotion and gratitude.

In July 1943\, Mussolini was deposed and arrested\, and the new Italian government signed an armistice with the Allies on September 8\, 1943. \nHowever\, Germany quickly invaded northern and central Italy\, freeing Mussolini and setting up a puppet state—the Italian Social Republic—based in Salò\, northern Italy. From 1943 to 1945\, Italy was divided: the south under Allied control and the north under Nazi and Fascist forces. \nIn response to the occupation\, Italian citizens formed the Resistance\, a broad alliance of partisans from diverse political backgrounds: communists\, socialists\, Catholics\, liberals and monarchists. These groups carried out sabotage\, intelligence and guerrilla warfare against Nazi troops and Fascist militias. The National Liberation Committee (CLN) coordinated the resistance and served as a provisional political authority. \nOn April 25\, 1945\, the National Liberation Committee (CLN) in Milan called for a general uprising across northern Italy. Cities including Milan\, Turin\, and Genoa were liberated by partisans before Allied troops arrived.  \nWithin days\, Mussolini was captured and executed (April 28\, 1945). The liberation marked the end of Nazi occupation and the collapse of Fascism in Italy. \nIn 1946\, the Italian government declared April 25 a national holiday to commemorate liberation and honor those who fought for freedom. It became a lasting symbol of Italy's transition from dictatorship to democracy and its path toward becoming a republic.

Citizens were monitored by the secret police (PIDE)\, and dissent was often punished. \nOn April 25\, 1974\, a peaceful military coup organized by the Armed Forces Movement overthrew the Estado Novo regime. Soldiers and tanks took control of key points in Lisbon\, including radio stations\, airports\, and government buildings\, facing minimal resistance. \nOrdinary citizens joined the soldiers in the streets\, offering them red carnations\, which they placed in their rifle barrels and on their uniforms\, giving the revolution its name "The Carnation Revolution". By the end of the day\, the dictatorship had collapsed\, Prime Minister Marcelo Caetano surrendered\, and political prisoners were freed. \nThe revolution marked the end of 48 years of dictatorship and initiated a transition toward democracy and decolonization. In 1975\, Portugal held its first free elections in half a century to elect the Constituent Assembly\, which drafted a new democratic constitution adopted in 1976. The revolution also led to the independence of Portugal's African colonies\, ending the long colonial wars. \nApril 25 was declared Liberty Day\, a national holiday honoring the revolution and the restoration of democratic freedoms.
