For decades\, Tajikistan functioned under Soviet centralized control\, with its political and economic systems shaped by Moscow. \nIn the late 1980s and early 1990s\, the Soviet Union weakened\, and independence movements surged across its republics. Tajik political leaders began calling for sovereignty as other Central Asian republics like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan took similar steps. \nOn September 9\, 1991\, the Supreme Soviet of Tajikistan declared full independence from the USSR. Tajikistan became one of the last Soviet republics to declare independence. \nThe declaration was followed by official recognition from other countries and admission to international bodies like the United Nations (in 1992). \nUnfortunately\, independence was followed by a devastating civil war from 1992 to 1997\, and the war ended in 1997 with a peace agreement signed between the government and the opposition. \nIn 1994\, a new constitution was adopted\, establishing a presidential republic.
