Enkutatash

Enkutatash, or Geez New Year, is a public holiday in Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is observed on Meskerem 1 on the Ethiopian calendar, which is September 11 (or September 12 in a leap year in the Ethiopian calendar) in the Gregorian calendar.

Enkutatash is the Ethiopian New Year, the first day in the first month of the Meskerem of the Ethiopian calendar. Similar to other cultures, during the new year, people will gather together to enjoy the traditional meal and exchange greetings and presents.

The Ethiopian and Gregorian calendars use the birthdate of Jesus Christ as the starting point for their calculations. However, the Ethiopian calendar believes Jesus Christ was born in 7 BC; thus, it counts years beginning in the year 8 of the common era. As a result, the leap year in the Ethiopian calendar is one year earlier than that in the Gregorian calendar.
