Commonwealth Covenant Day is a public holiday in the Northern Mariana Islands, observed on March 24 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the commonwealth covenant with the US was established in 1976.
The Europeans arrived in the early 16th century, and Spain claimed the islands in 1565. In 1898, Spain surrendered Guam to the US forces and sold the Mariana Islands to Germany 1899.
During World War I, Japan acquired most of the islands in 1919 but surrendered them after World War II. As a result, these islands became the United Nations Trust Territory under the administration of the United States. The territory was divided into six districts: the Marianas, the Marshall Islands, Palau, Ponape, Truk, and Yap 1969.
In 1975, the Northern Mariana Islands held a referendum on becoming a US commonwealth, and 79% of the voters favored the proposal. On March 24, 1976, the Northern Mariana Islands became a US commonwealth.
