Araw ng Kagitingan

Araw ng Kagitingan, also known as Bataan Day, is a national holiday in Philippines, and it is observed on April 9 each year.

Araw ng Kagitingan commemorates the fall of Bataan during World War II. The Battle of Bataan was a battle fought by the United States and the Philippine Commonwealth against Japan during World War II, and it was the most intense phase of Japanese invasion.

American and Filipino forces managed to fight the Japanese for over three months, but surrendered at the end when the Allied defense was progressively disintegrated and collapsed. In this battle, more than 60,000 Filipino and 15,000 American defenders surrounded and it was the largest in American and Filipino military histories.

The holiday was first named as "Bataan Day" in 1961, and then it was changed to "Araw ng Kagitingan (Bataan and Corregidor Day)". There were several other names, and the holiday was revised as "Araw ng Kagitingan" in 2010.
